‘What Happened to Monday': Noomi Rapace Takes on Septuple Role (Trailer)

What Happened to Monday

It’s a well established tradition for an actor to demonstrate his or her talent with a dual role. Sometimes a de facto triple role can sneak its way in, especially if one doppelganger ends up impersonating another. But Noomi Rapace has to be among the first actors in history (outside of Eddie Murphy or Michael Keaton, who did it for laughs) to play seven characters in one movie: What Happened to Monday, coming to Netflix later this month.

Rapace plays seven identical septuplets who are born into a world where people are only allowed to have one child, as part of an Orwellian government initiative to curb overpopulation. To avoid costing the government six black bags, they’re each assigned by dad Willem Dafoe a day of the week, for them to go out into the world under a single shared identity. Then, as always happens in these types of stories, she/they have to go on the run.

What Happened to Monday is somewhat reminiscent of Philip Jose Farmer’s Dayworld series, but this appears to be a more modest, filmable twist on a similar idea. You can take a look at the trailer for the movie below, and it comes to Netflix on August 18th.
