Magic Bench: Disney’s New Mixed Reality Toy (Video)

Magic Bench

The Disney R&D people may have finally lost it. I say that because they have spent millions of dollars on a new project called Magic Bench, which I’m pretty sure is just a gussied-up version of the ghost-in-the-car gag at the end of The Haunted Mansion ride. That’s probably being a little harsh on it, though.

The Magic Bench is a mixed reality toy that lets users see their onscreen image interact with animated characters and various other effects. The killer apps that push it above and beyond the typical children’s science museum camera setup it resembles at first comes in the form of interactivity (guests can pretend to touch and even talk to the other characters onscreen), and the haptic feedback capabilities that let guests feel vibrations that correspond to what’s happening onscreen.

Just on the off chance I didn’t quite describe the Disney Magic Bench adequately, you can see it in action in the video below. For more weird stuff the Disney scientist people are tinkering with, head over to the Disney Research Hub YouTube page here.
