Dubai Robocop Begins Automated Patrol This Week
I don’t have an exhaustive knowledge of the subject, but I’m pretty sure that the vast majority of robotic cops in fiction turn out to be a bad idea – principle example being Robocop. But that hasn’t stopped the Dubai Roboop, described by the police force with a penchant for showing off as “the world’s first operational Robocop,” from beginning its patrol of Dubai’s streets this week.
One somewhat reassuring difference between the Dubai Robocop and the scary fictional Robocops of our collective nightmares is the fact that this particular model doesn’t appear to be equipped with too much firepower – instead, this Robocop is more like a smart (powered by tech from Google and IBM) mascot designed to make Dubai friendlier and more helpful, according to the director-general of Smart Services at Dubai Police, Brigadier-General Khalid Nasser Al Razzouqi
“With an aim to assist and help people in the malls or on the streets, the Robocop is the latest smart addition to the force and has been designed to help us fight crime, keep the city safe and improve happiness levels.”
If all goes according to plan, the Dubai Robocop will have a whole bunch of robotic partners, as Dubai hopes to have a fourth of its police fourth mechanical by 2030.
