Dark Universe

It has long been known that Universal Pictures was planning an expansive “cinematic universe” in the vein of those created by Marvel and DC using its stable of classic monster characters, like Dracula, The Mummy, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Today, they released a bunch more details of their plans, including a brand name which I’m sure people will immediately begin using in their own day to day conversations: The Dark Universe.

The Dark Universe will begin in earnest with the release of The Mummy this summer. The following installment won’t come out until Valentine’s Day, 2019, when Bride of Frankenstein steals our hearts, and Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem already on board to play The Invisible Man and Frankenstein’s Monster, respectively. And interestingly, Universal seems to be playing up rather than minimizing the classic legacy of these characters, with an introductory video that hypes up the original films starring Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr., and more:

The Dark Universe has its own site here where you can get more information on the project’s animated logo, its Danny Elfman-composed theme music, and more.
