Why cartoon characters wear gloves

It’s Friday afternoon, which for many of us means it’s time to think about something, anything, other than work. If you’re looking for a suggestion, how’s this for a topic: Those weird white gloves classic cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Goofy, and even some renderings of Pac-Man are always wearing. Believe it or not, the expert explainers at Vox actually have an answer to the question of why cartoon characters wear gloves.

It turns out, the reason why cartoon characters wear gloves is a little more racist than you might expect. There were technical reasons for animators working in the 20s and 30s to draw gloves instead of hands, sure, but the white gloves were also often part of a tradition of blackface minstrelsy that goes back centuries. So basically, what I’m saying is, Mickey Mouse is racist.

But you don’t have to take my word for it—check out Why cartoon characters wear gloves, a short explainer video from Vox, below. And for more answers to life’s questions, take a look at the Vox YouTube channel here.
