Train Surfers

There is a subculture in Mumbai devoted to an activity called “train surfing,” which involves hanging off the side of a speeding train and pulling in before you’re pulverized by an oncoming pole, rail, or other obstacle. I know this because I just watched Train Surfers, a short documentary about the young people who engage in this dangerous (but, admittedly, thrilling to watch) activity.

Train Surfers combines primo don’t-try-this-at-home footage of train surfing with interviews with the people who do it, to give you a rough, expressionistic idea of the thought processes and sensations that drive such risky behavior. It’s also pretty cinematically lush, unlike a lot of documentaries, and I for one would happily watch a feature-length expansion.

For now, though, we just have Train Surfers below, part of the AFIDOCS series of short documentaries worthy of a wider audience. And for more from AFIDOCS, check out the project’s official site here.
