The years 1988 and 1999 are punctuation marks between what many consider to be a golden era of the club scene in New York City. For those of us who were either too young or too suburban to experience that age for ourselves, there’s now No Sleep: NYC Nightlife Flyers 1988-1999, a book that captures it by way of the flyers (or fliers, if you prefer) that were spread throughout the city at that time.

The art in No Sleep: NYC Nightlife Flyers 1988-1999 was designed to advertise hip hop shows, DJ sets, and various club promotions, but they now have new life as visually expressive and historically interesting artwork in a handsome collected hardcover form. DJ Stretch Armstrong and hip hop historian Evan Auerbach put the book together through exhaustive plumbing of the personal archives of many who were involved in the scene at the time, as well as the artists who designed them.

You can get a copy of No Sleep: NYC Nightlife Flyers 1988-1999 from Amazon right here, where it’s currently priced at a little over $26.
