David Bowie: The Last Five Years

Ten months after his death stunned the world, rock icon David Bowie, aka Ziggy Stardust, aka The Thin White Duke, aka Halloween Jack, aka the Goblin King, aka David Jones is well on his way to becoming the JFK of rock documentary subjects. But the BBC recently announced a documentary that will take a different approach than the vast majority of Bowiementaries, and it’s reflected in the film’s title: David Bowie: The Last Five Years.

David Bowie: The Last Five Years will cover, what a surprise, the last five years of Bowie‘s life and career, which, thanks to his relentless creative energy right up to his death, happen to coincide exactly. The documentary will be produced by one of Bowie’s most legendary and long-lasting collaborators, Tony Visconti, who had this to say about the project in a BBC interview:

“He would stand in front of the mic and for the four or five minutes he was singing he would pour his heart out. I could see through the window he was really feeling it. The audio picked up his breathing, it wasn’t that he was out of breath, he was hyperventilating in a way, getting his energy up to sing this.”

You’ll be able to watch David Bowie: In The Last Five Years on BBC 2 on January 10th of next year, after which hopefully a wider release will follow.
