Ghost Drivers

What would you do if after you booked a ride on Uber or some other rideshare service you noticed that something looked … off about your driver? As in, their profile picture appears to be like something out of a Kiyoshi Kurosawa film? If you’d immediately cancel the ride and look for something else, you’re not alone, and that’s why the “Ghost Drivers” scam reportedly spreading in popularity in China is so effective.

These “Ghost Drivers” use creepy profile pics to scare off customers, thus collecting the service’s small cancellation fee. It’s a crafty and admirably lazy way to scam the system, but the real entertainment value comes from the macabre touch of the profile pictures designed to frighten off customers, like the one seen above. Yikes!

Luckily for those who don’t like getting ripped off and are afraid of ghosts, Uber is reportedly aware of the scam and is taking steps to prevent it from being implemented, ideally before it spreads from China to other parts of the world.
