Pizza ATM

When you think about it, the ATM is one of the most influential inventions of the last 50 years. ¬†Everything from Redbox to Burritobox to Amazon Lockers have some Automated Teller DNA in their metaphorical bloodstreams. But there’s only one ATM in the world that serves pizza rather than cash, and the world’s only¬†Pizza ATM can be found on the campus of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Pizza ATM was installed near Xavier’s residence halls in order to “solve this problem of having a late-night pizza option on campus,” according to Xavier Assistant Vice President Jude Kiah. Basically, it works like this: Every morning, 70 pizzas made by the college’s dining services will be deposited in the machine’s refrigerated compartments. When a customer selects what kind of pizza they want, the corresponding pie is automatically dropped into a convection oven, where it goes through a three-minute flash bake before being deposited right into the hot, eager hands of some hungry sophomore.

Pizzas purchased from the Pizza ATM cost $9, not bad for virtually instantaneous service. You can read a bit more about the machine here, and if you’re not either an Xavier University student or up for a trip to Cincinnati to see the machine in action, you’ll just have to wait until one comes to your town.
