Svalbard Global Seed Vault: A Fail-Safe Seed Storage Facility

Svalbard Global Seed Vault

We must be living in Watchmen times lately, since fear of a great, potentially planet-altering disaster appears to be in the air. One recent example is the Immortus, the solar-powered car engineered for a post-gasoline apocalyptic landscape.  And now we have the much more practical (if for no other reason than it’s not a consumer product) Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a structure meant to be a “fail-safe seed storage facility” for if the worst case scenario regarding Earth’s crops and agricultural resources happens.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is “the world’s largest collection of crop diversity,” nestled in a mountain on the Svalbard archipelago between Norway and the North Pole. Should we ever survive an extinction-level event, we’ll at least theoretically be able to access an entire planet’s worth of seeds inside the structure (and hopefully The Wire on Blu-ray or something is in there too, just in case).

You can visit the Svalbard Global Seed Vault via its elaborate interactive website here. And hopefully that will be the only way you’ll ever need to visit it for a while.
