Lytro Cinema: “The Ultimate Creative Tool”
Film cameras have advanced a lot in the last several years, with particular leaps and bounds occurring in the field of digital cinematography. But the Lytro Cinema makes all those leaps and bounds seem like a fat camp hopscotch tournament, thanks to Lytro’s Light Field technology.
The mechanics of Light Field are (as you might imagine) quite technical and complicated, but in layman’s terms the Lytro Cinema camera captures “all the rays of light within a scene,” imbuing every pixel of a given image with an unparalleled wealth of data. The end result is a new frontier of creative choices that can be made after the actors have gone home. Depth of field, shutter angles, frame rates, aperture angles, and more can all be adjusted after the fact, as if you were traveling back in time and changing them in-camera.
The Lytro Cinema is probably only of interest to industry professionals at this point, but it’s only a matter of time before Light Field and other similar technology becomes available on smartphones and whatever crazy devices we carry around in the future. In the meantime, you can get a lot more information on the gear at Lytro’s official site here.
