Ice Music: Ice Sculptor Tim Linhart Makes Instruments Out of Ice (Video)
Ice sculpture is usually thought of as something you look at without it filling any functional purpose (the occasional Ice Hotel notwithstanding), but ice sculptor Tim Linhart specializes in pieces that do a lot more than just sit and take up space. He made musical instruments out of ice for an endeavor he called Ice Music.
Ice Music was born after Linhart crafted an upright bass from ice, only to find that when he actually tried to play it it sounded much better than he’d expected. From there, he moved on to violins, guitars, and xylophones, all of which now join to create a one-of-a-kind concert experience that requires constant temperature maintenance so the instruments don’t melt.
If you never get to see Ice Music live, at least you can see (and hear) it in action in the video below, as part of the Buck the Cubicle web series. And for more on Linhart’s work, check out his Organic Spa profile right here.
