Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture

Our grandfathers didn’t generally think of sneakers as fashion objects or collectibles, but now there’s a whole subculture devoted to sneakers exclusively as those two things. And there’s also a new book all about that transition, called Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture.

Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture is a pretty-close-to-comprehensive history of sneakers, stretching all the way back to before Lincoln was president (!!) and into our current Yeezy fervor. Many different brands and museum collections lend material to the book, which also includes a variety of essays, interviews, and a dedicated retrospective on the sneaker designs of Nike’s legendary Tinker Hatfield.

You can pick up your copy of Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture at Amazon here, where as of this writing it is priced at around $40. In a perfect world, you’d then be able to turn around and sell it for three or four times that much, but this isn’t a perfect world.
