101 Funniest Screenplays

In today’s Judd Apatow-dominated world, it’s hard to imagine a time when funny Hollywood comedies started with funny scripts, rather than just groupings of talented improvisers in a room. But the Writers Guild of America remembers this wonderful era, and they celebrated it recently by releasing their list of the 101 Funniest Screenplays.

The WGA’s 101 Funniest Screenplays is dominated by established comedy classics like Woody Allen’s Annie Hall and Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker’s Airplane. But there are a few surprising choices – like, for instance, Beverly Hills Cop, which I always thought got 99% of its comedic value from the on-set comedy stylings of Eddie Murphy, but evidently the WGA disagrees, placing the Beverly Hills Cop script in the #89 spot.

To see what was number one, and to check out the rest of the 101 Funniest Screenplays, head over to the Writers Guild of America’s site right here where you can see the list in its entirety.
