El Chapo’s Prison Break Estimated to Cost $50 Million
On the latest episode of the series I just made up, Prison Breaks of the Rich and Famous, we have notorious Mexican drug lord El Chapo, whose recent escape from lockup in Mexico is making headlines all over the world. Some of those headlines are coming from a pretty incredible figure courtesy of one Jhon Jairo Velasquez Vasquez, former hitman for another notorious drug lord, Pablo Escobar.
That figure is $50 million, which is Vasquez’s estimate of what El Chapo had to spend on his incredible prison escape. The bulk of those costs are for the bribery of officials at the prison where El Chapo was being held – as any respectable criminal knows, the richer you are, the more expensive your bribes are, and since El Chapo is estimated to be worth something like a billion dollars, you can bet that nobody he had to bribe in order to escape was offering their services cheaply. It also includes the actual method of escape, a long underground tunnel equipped with a motorcycle on rails (!!).
