No Man's Sky

“Open-world” video games have been an ongoing trend ever since the Grand Theft Auto series popularized the form. But world’s don’t get much more open that the insanely ambitious No Man’s Sky, a space exploration game coming to PlayStation 4 and Windows on some unspecified future date.

No Man’s Sky‘s most important feature is the massive, mathematically generated universe in which it takes place – and in this case, the word “universe” is meant literally, since it’s made up of a practically limitless cosmos containing 18 quintillion planets. Players will explore this huge universe, and discoveries they make will be shared with others online – and with such a big universe, it’s possible one could play the game without ever meeting another player.

It’s an incredible next step in the evolution of video games, and to be honest, the vastness of it all is making my head feel weird. No release date is set yet, but No Man’s Sky has plenty of promotional materials on its official site here, such as the official trailer for the game below. Now, I think I’m going to lie down for a while.
