Quentin Tarantino Discussing The Hateful Eight

While you’ve probably been enjoying pristine digital projection at your local movie theater, what you might not realize is the richness and resolution you’re missing out on if you’re no longer able to see actual film in a movie theater. But Quentin Tarantino is hoping to demonstrate what you’ve been missing, and there’s a rumor floating around that his upcoming western The Hateful Eight will screen in actual 70mm film in about 50 select movie theaters across the country.

Tarantino wouldn’t be the first director to shoot on film and have his work exhibited in its proper format – just last year, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice had a few 70mm screenings in various cities. But Tarantino has a mass popularity that Anderson doesn’t, and a few strategically placed 70mm prints of The Hateful Eight might be just the shot in the arm that the dying art form needs.

The rumors come on the heels of a screening of some 70mm Panavision test footage from The Hateful Eight at Cine Gear Expo on the Paramount backlot. According to reports (one of which you can read here), the footage blew everybody present away, so hopefully you’ll be close enough to one of those 50 movie theaters to get blown away yourself when the movie comes out later this year.
