3D Robotics Solo: “The World’s First Smart Drone” (Photos)

The phrase “smart drone” sounds a little like an oxymoron if you think about it – isn’t the whole point of “drones” that they AREN’T smart, and that they do whatever their human users tell them to do? But that hasn’t stopped the people at 3D Robotics from unveiling what they refer to as the first smart drone in the world – the 3D Robotics Solo.

The 3D Robotics Solo is supposed to take a lot of the menial work out of operating a drone, so that users can focus on capturing the best aerial images and video possible. To do that, it’s equipped with two Linux computers that can handle both programmable and preset flight routes. The package also includes built-in GoPro cameras and a handheld controller.

But really, the best way to learn all about the 3D Robotics Solo smart drone is to head to the product’s official site here, and see a few photos of the drone in action in the gallery below. The drone is set to be released on May 31st.
