Tidal: Artist-Owned Music Streaming Service Launched (Video)
The millions of people who use music streaming services like Spotify or Pandora are probably for the most part satisfied with their experiences. But the artists who make the actual music evidently aren’t, because a whole bunch of them got together and launched Tidal, a premium, high-quality streaming service that purports to be artist-owned and to bring the art back to the human race.
Behind Madonna and Jay Z’s over-the-top rhetoric, what that actually translates to in human English is that Tidal users can use the service to listen to 1,411 kbps lossless Flac files, which have a much better standard of quality than the usual mp3. This is good for both listeners who care about music and the artists who care about what their music sounds like – but it does come at a premium, as a high-quality Tidal subscription costs about twice what a subscription to Spotify does.
Even if you don’t plan on making the switch over to Tidal, you might be interested to watch its lavish unveiling video below, featuring an incredible swath of music stars like Jay Z, Beyonce, Daft Punk, Kanye West, Jack White, and a lot more.
