“More Cowbell” Chosen by Fans as Best ‘SNL’ Sketch of the 2000s (Video)

Saturday Night Live is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. And as part of that commemoration, the show has been asking its fans to vote on the best sketches from its five decades on the air, with the most recent poll covering the 2000s. And in a landslide victory, the classic sketch “More Cowbell” was chosen as the best of that decade.

Given “More Cowbell”‘s continued cultural relevance and quotability, it’s not exactly a surprise that it was chosen as the best SNL sketch of the 2000s by fans. But it is kind of strange when you reflect on how darn weird this sketch is. It’s based on a seeming non-sequitur about cowbell in a decades-old Blue Oyster Cult song, and features Christopher Walken as a music producer named Bruce Dickinson who wasn’t even involved with the recording of the track in real life. And yet, the sketch has remained a popular reference point ever since.
