The great painters of the 17th century might have had their good points, but they never had Jay Z or Tupac sitting in front of them as subjects. Artist Amar Stewart has rectified that historical wrong with a new series of paintings featuring famous rappers as they might have been painted back in the 1600s.
Amar Stewart’s style is much messier and more expressive than paintings generally were back in the 17th century, but I imagine he’s going for more than just boring period accuracy with these paintings. And the characterization of Eminem is just brilliant.
You can see some of Amar Stewart’s paintings imagining rappers in the 17th century in the gallery above. And for more from the artist, as well as to purchase some of his work, take a look at his website here. One of these paintings might be a good way to inject a little taste of the old, old, old days into your home decor.
