Google Spends $3.2 Billion on Smart Appliance Brand Called “Nest” (Video)
Even if you’re used to news of Google dropping a ton of money on one new tech company or another, the news that they recently spent $3.2 billion to acquire Nest might attract your attention. That’s because Nest was a relatively low-profile company, producing “smart” appliances like thermostats and carbon monoxide alarms that sync up with users’ smartphones to provide a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.
The question of why Google is interested in a company like Nest is an interesting one, because according to an article in Complex (you can read it here), Google’s real goal is getting their hands on the data collected by appliances that will be operational in potentially millions of homes. Think about it: Google will know through your thermostat (and God knows what other future appliances Nest will come up with) information about when you leave your house, and when you come back. Makes sense now, doesn’t it?
