best dressed 2013 oscars academy awards

The 2013 Academy Awards were widely panned by critics, the blogosphere, the Twitterverse, and just about every other forum. People complained about he host, Seth MacFarlane, and of course the absurd length. And really,  this shouldn’t come as a surprise. People say pretty much the same thing about the Oscars every year—which makes you wonder why people even bother to watch.

Still, there was one thing that didn’t suck: the red carpet fashion. It seems as though we’re in the midst of a major revival of classic, timeless style right now. Throughout the entire 2013 awards season and, really, for the last couple of years, stars have strutted red carpets in gowns and tuxedos that harken back to the golden age of Hollywood.

This is a very good thing. Why? Because, frankly, these people show us how to dress. (I’ll let someone else decide whether than is good or bad.) And the styles that are popular now are actually very attainable on a limited budget compared to some of the more avante-guarde stuff we used to see.

Anyway, today we’re going to take a look at the best-dressed celebs to walk the red carpet at the 2013 Academy Awards. Sit back, grab a pen and paper, and prepare to take some notes.

30. Justin Theroux

15 justin theroux - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Jennifer Aniston? Not a fan this year. Thought her dressed looked like it was made from drapes—vert fancy, expensive silk drapes. However, her fiance Justin Theroux looked pretty dapper. (No wonder he was able to snag a woman like Jennifer Aniston.)

29. Nicole Kidman

15 nicole kidman - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

I don’t understand why I like Nicole Kidman’s dress. I’m not normally a fan of such busy patterns and opulent fabrics. However, this one just really seemed to compliment the woman’s features and skin tone perfectly. (Of course, Nicole and her dress look a lot better without standing next to Keith Urban, who always seems to look like a feathery-haired toolbox.)

28. Christoph Waltz

14 christoph waltz - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Speaking of huge tools, did you hear this guy’s acceptance speech for best supporting actor? The guy said, “We participated in a hero’s journey, the hero here being Quentin…You climbed the mountain…because you were not afraid.”

Please excuse my gagging. Seriously. A hero? HERO?? No, I totally get it. The guy who makes movies for a living is just like those firefighters who ran into towering infernos on 9/11 and gave their lives to save others. Pretty much the same thing.

Seriously, though, whether you liked Waltz’s speech or not, you have to admit the man knows how to wear a suit.  Love the shawl collar, and man it is tailored perfectly.

27. Jennifer Hudson

14 jennifer hudson - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

I didn’t like Jennifer Hudson’s dress the first time I saw it. But upon further review, it really grew on me.

26. Channing Tatum

13 channing tatum - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Full disclosure: I’m not a big Channing Tatum fan. However, the guy wore this three-piece suite like a boss. Particularly sharp are the pants—cut just right—and the bow tie, which is just the right size.

25. Sandra Bullock

13 sandra bullock - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Sandra Bullock is obviously some kind of sorceress. How else could she look this amazing at the age of 48?

Okay, fine, maybe she just didn’t smoke and stayed out of the sun.

24. Michael Douglas

12 michael douglas - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

If you look this sharp when you’re 68, you’re doing something very, very right.

And stay tuned for Michael Douglas’s wife. She’s coming up.

23. Olivia Munn

12 olivia munn - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

If you don’t like Oliva Munn’s dress, that’s cool. It is a little complicated. But personally, I think she looks like a statue of roman goddess here. (And that’s a good thing…I think.)

22. Hugh Jackman

11 hugh-jackman - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

While Hugh Jackman definitely looks better without the beard, the man still looks fantastic in this double-breasted shawl-collared jacket.

21. Giuliana Rancic

11 giuliana rancic - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Would I like to see Giuliana Rancic eat a couple bacon cheeseburgers? Sure. But nobody’s perfect (except me), and man does she wear the hell out of this fantastic black gown.

20. Bradley Cooper

10 bradley cooper - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Bradley Cooper gets a C- for the beard, but an A+ for this perfectly cut suit. Sharp lapels, tapered pants, subtle vest, crisp tie—it all works.

19. Reese Witherspoon

10 reese witherspoon - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Blue is definitely a good color for Reese Witherspoon. Talk about a classic Hollywood look.

18. Bryan Cranston

9 bryan cranston - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

I honestly had no idea that Bryan Cranston was this dapper. I guess I’ll always think of him as either that wacky dad on Malcolm in the Middle or the meth dealer/school teacher on Breaking Bad.

17. Norah Jones

9 norah jones - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Everyone was raving about how great Taylor Swift looked at the Grammys a few weeks ago in her greek goddess-like dress, but I thought she looked dumb. If you ask me, this is you do “classically inspired.” (I didn’t even realize this was Norah Jones at first.)

16. Daniel Day-Lewis

8 daniel day lewis - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Daniel Day-Lewis won the award for best actor on Sunday night. But if they had an award for “Best Dressed Middle-Aged Couple that Puts Younger Celebs to Shame” award, he and his wife would have won that, too.

If I look half this sharp when I’m in my mid-50s, I’d be thrilled.

15. Queen Latifah

8 queen latifah - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Dear Adele: just because you’re a fuller figured babe, that doesn’t mean you have to wear curtains for a dress. Save this picture on your phone and model yourself after Queen Latifah, here.

14. Seth MacFarlane

7 seth mcfarlane - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

You may have thought Seth MacFarlane sucked as an Oscars host. But at least the guy looked great.

13. Jennifer Garner

7 jennfer garner - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Hubby Ben Affleck looked like a doofus wearing baggy tuxedo pajamas—not that he cared all that much, carrying his Best Picture Oscar around with him—but Jennifer Garner was radiant in this colorful gown.

12. Suraj Sharma

6 suraj sharma - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

This Life of Pi star may not be a household name, but he sure knows how to dress. He was easily one of the best-looking guys on the red carpet.

11. Octavia Spencer

6 octavia spencer - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Hey Adele, remember what I just said about how full-figured babes don’t have to wear curtains? Well, here’s another example. Octavia Spencer looked freakin gorgeous at the Oscars, and she’s not exactly a stick figure, is she? Well done, Octavia.

10. Joseph Gordon-Levitt

5 joseph gordon levitt - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

If Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s bow tie weren’t about an inch and a half too long, he probably would have cracked the top 5.

9. Catherine Zeta-Jones

5 catherine zeta jones - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Unfortunately, it looked to me as thought Catherine Zeta-Jones had some work done to make her face a little more “youthful.” But at least she still knows how to choose a stunning gown.

8. George Clooney

4 george clooney - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

I’m not digging Clooney’s bushy silver beard here, but that’s okay. The man still looked like one of the coolest guys on the planet. (That simple white shirt is especially noteworthy.)

7. Amanda Seyfried

4 amanda seyfried - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Amanda Seyfried: what’s not to like?

6. Daniel Radcliffe

3 daniel racliffe - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Wow, look at Harry Potter. The pants are tailored perfectly, and the jacket-shirt-bow tie combo is absolutely perfect. The guy looks like true Hollywood royalty.

5. Samantha Barks

3 samantha barks - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Such a simple dress, and yet Samantha Barks was easily one of the two or three most breathtaking female actors on the red carpet on Sunday. Absolutely fantastic.

4. Eddie Redmayne

2 eddie redmayne - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Not being a huge fan of depressing melodramatic movie musicals (i.e., Les Misérables), I had never heard of this guy until he turned up on our list of the best-dressed stars at the Golden Globes a few weeks back. But with this strong showing at the Oscars, Eddie made a strong case for himself as one of the most stylish men in Hollywood today.

3. Stacy Keibler

2-stacy-keibler-2013-oscars-academy-awards-best-dressed

Stacy Keibler, George Clooney’s latest squeeze, looked absolutely amazing. It’s hard to believe a woman this classy and sophisticated got her start in the WWE.

2. Chris Pine

1 chris pine - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

The new Captain Kirk went with a very bold double-breasted look, and he pulled it off better than I ever would have expected.

I guess that’s why I’m not a Hollywood stylist.

1. Jessica Chastain

1 jessica chastain - 2013 oscars academy awards best-dressed

Yep, this one was a no-brainer. Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain didn’t even look human on the red carpet. She looked like some sketch of a designer’s fantasy. People just don’t look better than this.
