Ridiculous Holiday Displays

It’s December, so that means you have no excuse for not having your Christmas lights up. Well no excuse but one: You can’t hope to compete with the best, most elaborate, and most ridiculous Christmas displays out there, so why bother? As if to hammer that point home, here are 9 of the most elaborate holiday displays out there.

Click through this slideshow to see some of the most elaborate home displays of all time. From giant airport-worthy lights that might be visible from space to huge robot snowmen, this is the ultimate display of Christmas cheer. Just remember not to eat any of the snow. It’s expensive.

Christmas Card Lane

Lots of towns have that one street that for whatever reason is famous for its Christmas lights. In Kansas City, it’s appropriately known as “Christmas Card Lane.” And it includes home displays such as “Paulie’s Penguin Playground,” “Mike Babick’s Falmouth Christmas Display,” and more.

Make A Wish Foundation Display

This house in Darboy, WI was set up for Christmas thanks to an arrangement through the Make A Wish Foundation. And as the relatively new form of animated Christmas lights set to music is concerned, it’s one of the best. Check out the “fountain of light” in the middle of the display – pretty cool, right?

"You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch"

Another house that does a cool synchronized-lights routine is in Montgomery, TX. And it’s too the universally-beloved Christmas classic “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” Seriously, I think even hardcore Christmas-music-haters love that song. And this light display is good enough to match it.

"Gangnam Style" Christmas Lights

2012 has been the year of “Gangnam Style.” The Korean music video has caught on line wildfire recently, and has ascended to the most watched video on YouTube. So why wouldn’t there be a Christmas light display set to the song?

'Angry Birds' Christmas Lights

If there’s one thing that’s missing from most holiday lighting displays, it’s interactivity. But that’s not the case with this pretty amazing display, based on the popular iPhone game Angry Birds. It works with “two computers,” “10 Light-o-rama 16 channel controllers,” and “more than 20,000 lights” – all coming together for a pretty impressive effect whether you’re the one playing it or not.

"Guitar Hero" Christmas Lights

From the makers of the Angry Birds Christmas lights comes a holiday lights display based on Guitar Hero. As you can see in the above video, it works just like the real Guitar Hero, only instead of your TV it’s a garage door. It’s better than the next best thing to being a rock star!

"Jingle Bells Techno" Christmas Lights

“Jingle Bells” is one of those holiday songs that we’ve all heard way too many times, and a techno remix isn’t likely to be a revelation to anyone. But it does make good Christmas light sync-up music, as this elaborate display shows. Gotta love the classics.

The von Hollen House

In Central Alberta, Canada, there’s one family who has the market on ridiculous Christmas displays pretty much tied up. They’re the von Hollens, and they have a display of over 100,000 LED lights. They’ve also found a novel way of offsetting some of the expenses: Corporate sponsorship.

Waikele Christmas Lights

This animated light show gives you something new to look at almost every second, all in celebration of the Christmas season. From stars, to a Christmas tree, to, uh, red and green X’s (?), this Christmas light display has it all. Doesn’t it make you want to go eat a candy cane or something?
