Hottest Peppers In The World

Taste is obviously a very subjective thing. What may be too spicy for one person might be completely bland for another. But did you know that in the case of spicy hot peppers, there’s a way to objectively measure the amount of figurative “heat”? It’s called the Scoville Organoleptic Test, and it measures the amount of capsaicin (the stuff that burns your¬†tongue) in peppers.

So check out this slide show for 9 of the hottest peppers in the world according to the Scoville scale. But be warned: All of these peppers are much spicier than any “spicy” foods you might get in a mainstream context, and require serious endurance in order to consume. But it couldn’t hurt to read about them, right?

Trinidad Scorpion CARDI - 990,000 SHU

The least hot variation of the Trinidad Scorpion pepper on this list is the CARDI. But of course, “least hot” is a relative term, since this pepper has still been clocked in at a mouth-scorching 990,000 SHU (“SHU” stands for “Scoville Heat Units”).

Naga Morich - 1,000,000 SHU

The Naga Morich’s native home is in regions of India, but it’s sometimes grown in the US and in Australia where it’s used to make particularly challenging blends of hot sauce. The Naga Morich routinely breaks the million mark on the Scoville scale, so you know not to treat it lightly.

Dorset Naga - 1,032,310 SHU

One version of the Dorset Naga is part of a family of peppers known as Naga Bhut Jolokia – a family that once held the title of world’s hottest pepper. How hot? Well, to put it in perspective, it was billed by the Guinness Book of World Records as being “10000 times hotter than Tabasco sauce.” Some extra saltines here, please.

Chocolate Bhut Jolokia - 1,000,000 SHU

Another pepper related to the Naga Bhut Jolokia family is the Chocolate Bhut Jolokia. It’s named for its distinctive dark color, but don’t be fooled: Anything that’s “sweet” about the flavor of this pepper can only be tasted if you can ignore the blistering 1 million+ Scoville Heat Units to be found in each bite.

Infinity Chilli - 1,067,286 SHU

Another pepper that once held the official title of “World’s Hottest Pepper” is the Infinity Chilli. It clocked in at 1,067,286 SHU, but only held the title for 2 weeks before a spicier pepper was found (in the world of hot peppers, the title of hottest can change quickly). But this is still a massively hot pepper, make no mistake.

Bedfordshire Super Naga - 1,120,000 SHU

The Bedfordshire Super Naga is one of the only million+ SHU peppers that’s readily available to the general public (in the United Kingdom, that is). And even though there are hotter peppers out there, it would take a pretty keen (not to mention courageous) hot pepper enthusiast to be able to discern the difference, having been clocked at 1,120,000 SHU.

Trinidad Scorpion Butch T - 1,463,700 SHU

The “Butch T” of this hot pepper’s name refers to Butch Taylor, the owner of the hot sauce company said to have developed it. As for the “Scorpion” part, well…you should know not to eat anything called “Scorpion” (actually, it refers to the fact that the point looks like a scorpion’s stinger).

7 Pot Douglah - 1,853,936 SHU

Currently billed as the “second-hottest pepper in the world” is the 7 Pot Douglah. In fact, many amateur pepper tasters consider it to be the hottest – but it’s technical spot on the Scoville scale says otherwise. Still, some analysts speculate that it may one day crack the 2 million SHU mark.

Trinidad Moruga Scorpion - 2,009,231 SHU

Who better than Paul Bosland, director of the¬† Chile Institute, to tell us a little bit about the Trinidad Morgua Scorpion – the hottest chilli pepper in the world? Here he is: “You take a bite. It doesn’t seem so bad, and then it builds and it builds and it builds. So it is quite nasty.” My mouth is watering already!
