strongest beers in the world

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a new kind of beer war brewing out there. And no, it’s the battle of “whose light yellow beer-flavored water tastes less terrible.” It’s for who can make the strongest, most alcoholic brew in the world.

Why is this war being waged? Well, basically, just for bragging rights—and of course the free publicity. You see, whenever you announce that you have concocted the new strongest beer in the world, lots of newspapers, websites, and blogs write about your brewery, and that strengthens your brand.

Anyway, today we’re going to take you on a tour of the world’s strongest beers. Not only do they boast an insanely high alcohol content, but in many cases they have fantastic names and labels. So really it’s a win-win.

Ready to get started? Good. Let’s go.

25. Mikkeller Festival Special Edition 2012 - Stella 3

25 Mikkeller Festival Special Edition - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: De Proefbrouwerij

Country: Denmark

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 20.1%

While you’ll rarely find beers that break the 20% threshold on store shelves, on this list 20% is just scratching the surface. So buckle up.

24. Rapp OMG Batch 005

24 Rapp OMG Batch 005 - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Rapp Brewing Company

Country: Florida, USA

Style: Barley Wine

ABV: 21%

This photo is of batch 001, but I’m going to assume the bottle is pretty much the same.

23. DuClaw Colossus

23 duclaw colossus - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: DuClaw Brewing Company

Country: Maryland, USA

Style: American Strong Ale

ABV: 21.92%

The brewer recommends trying this one at multiple temperatures (including heated to 105°F) to experience all the different complexities this one has to offer.

22. Struise Black Damnation XI - Special K

22 Struise Black Damnation XI - Special K - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: De Struise Brouwers

Country: Belgium

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 22%

This is just the first of three beers form the “Black Damnation” line to make the list. The others are still to come.

21. Brodies Elizabethan

21 Brodies Elizabethan - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Brodies

Country: England

Style: English Strong Ale

ABV: 22%

This very limited edition ale will be extremely hard to find, but once you do it’ll get you wasted in no time.

20. LagerHaus .44 Magnum Ale

20 LagerHaus .44 Magnum Ale - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: LagerHaus Brewery and Grill

Country: Florida, USA

Style: Barley Wine

ABV: 22%

Leave it to a Florida brewer to name a beer after a gun.

19. Herkimer Toripuru Strong Bock

19 Herkimer Toripuru Strong Bock - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Herkimer Pub & Brewery

Country: Minnesota, USA

Style: Doppelbock

ABV: 23%

When you saw the name you probably thought it was a German brewery, right? Wrong. It’s a brewpub in the Twin Cities area.

18. Fleurac Octo-Pyroclastic Black IPA

18 Fleurac Octo-Pyroclastic Black IPA - Strongest Beers in the World 2

Brewer: Fleurac

Country: France

Style: Black IPA

ABV: 24%

I’ve never been particularly impressed with French brews (French Canadian brews are a different story), but I do love black IPAs and being sloshed, so I guess I’d give this one a shot.

17. Struise Five Squared

17 Struise Five Squared - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: De Struise Brouwers

Country: Belgium

Style: Quadrupel

ABV: 25%

Get it? Five times five equals 25? 25% ABV? So clever.

16. Emelisse XXV Imperial Russian Stout

16 Emelisse XXV Imperial Russian Stout - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Bierbrouwerij Emelisse

Country: Netherlands

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 25%

The Russian Imperial Stout style came about because the Russian Czar wanted something serious. Man did he get it. This is the perfect style for ratcheting up the alcohol content.

15. Struise Special Darkest Night

15 Struise Darkest Night - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: De Struise Brouwers

Country: Belgium

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 26%

Was this some kind of cross promotion with the second Christian Bale Batman flick?

14. Struise Black Damnation V - Double Black

14 Struise Black Damnation V - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: De Struise Brouwers

Country: Belgium

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 26%

Here’s the second offering from the Black Damnation line. As you can tell by the title, this one is really black.

13. Samuel Adams Utopias

13 Sam Adams Utopias - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Boston Beer Company

Country: Massachusetts, USA

Style: Barley Wine

ABV: 27%

This stuff is basically like the brandy of beers and is supposed to be excellent. However, at $100 a bottle, I won’t be sampling it any time soon.

12. Südstern XXL

12 Brauhause Südstern XXL - Strongest Beer in the World

Brewer: Brauhaus Südstern

Country: Germany

Style: Eisbock

ABV: 27.6%

Eisbock is basically an even stronger version of a doppelbock, which is strong in its own right. As you may have guessed, the “eis” in the title of the style is German for “ice.” They call is “icebock” because they freeze the beer and remove the ice that forms, which results in a higher alcohol content.

11. Samuel Adams Utopias 10th Anniversary

11 utopias 10th anniversary - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Boston Beer Company

Country: Massachusetts, USA

Style: Barley Wine

ABV: 29%

As far as I can tell, the only difference between the regular Utopias and the 10th Anniversary edition is a measly 2%.

10. Schorschbräu Schorschbock 31%

10 Schorschbräu Schorschbock 31 - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Kleinbrauerei Schorschbräu

Country: Germany

Style: Eisbock

ABV: 30.86%

These guys tried to give themselves a higher ABV by rounding up, but I’m not having any of that. In the war to make the strongest beer, every fraction of a percentage point counts.

9. Schorschbräu Schorschbock 32%

9 Schorschbräu Schorschbock 31 Black Edition - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Kleinbrauerei Schorschräu

Country: Germany

Style: Eisbock

ABV: 32%

Okay, here they don’t have to round up. The ABV actually is a full 32%. (As you can see, this brewery likes to move forward incrementally.)

8. BrewDog Tactical Nuclear Penguin

8 Tactical Nuclear Penguin - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: BrewDog

Country: Scotland

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 32%

As far as I’m concerned, this is the best name in the history of beer.

7. Revelation Cat Freeze the Penguin

7 Revelation Cat Freeze the Penguin - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Revelation Cat Craft Brewing

Country: Italy

Style: Barley Wine

ABV: 35%

Here’s a surprise: a brewer from Italy makes the list. I mean, the Italians are known for a lot of things—wine, cheese, pasta, heads of state with penchants for underaged prostitutes—but making beer is not one of them.

6. Struise Black Damnation VI - Messy

6 struise black damnation vi messy - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: De Struise Brouwers

Country: Belgium

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 39%

Here is the third and final entry from the Black Damnation line. I couldn’t seem to find a photo of BD VI, so here’s a photo of the other brews in the line to give you an idea.

5. Baladin Esprit de Noel

5 baladin esprit de noel - strongest beers in the world

Brewer: Birrifico Le Baladin

Country: Italy

Style: Belgian Strong Ale

ABV: 40%

The only thing more surprising than one Italian brewer on the list is a second Italian brewer on the list. Unfortunately, “Esprit de Noel” sounds more like a perfume than a beer, so they need to work on their names a bit.

4. BrewDog Sink the Bismarck

4 BrewDog Sink the Bizmarck - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: BrewDog

Country: Scotland

Style: Imperial IPA

ABV: 41%

Now we’re getting serious. Everything about this beer is hardcore. It’s got for times the hops for insane bitterness, then is frozen four times, getting every last drop of unnecessary water out to raise the ABV to a staggering 41%.

3. Schorschbräu Schorschbock 43%

3 Schorschbräu Schorschbock 43 - Strongest Beer in the World

Brewer: Kleinbrauerei Schorschräu

Country: Germany

Style: Eisbock

ABV: 43%

The review of this tongue-twister aren’t good, but hey, it sure as hell is strong.

2. Schorschbräu Schorschbock 57% finis coronat opus

2 Schorschbräu Schorschbock 57 finis coronat opus - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Kleinbrauerei Schorschräu

Country: Germany

Style: Eisbock

ABV: 57%

With their most recent edition of Schorschbräu Schorschbock, Kleinbrauerei Schorschräu took a giant leap forward in alcohol content. (14% is a big increase, right?)

1. Brewmeister Armageddon

1 Brewmeister Armageddon - Strongest Beers in the World

Brewer: Brewmeister

Country: Scotland

Style: Eisbock

ABV: 65%

Brewmeister just recently brought the title of “World’s Strongest Beer” back to Scotland with their ridiculous 65% ABV Eisbock. Obviously you won’t be able to drink an entire bottle of this stuff in one sitting, so I guess if you don’t have any friends around when you crack one open, you can always save it for when you run out of motor oil.
